There are many gender identities in addition of these two. We will discuss all these different gender identities in our next upcoming articles. but for this article we will focus on ‘Transgender’.

“Transgender” is an umbrella term for people whose gender identity, gender expression or behavior does not match the sex to which they were assigned at birth.

When a child is born, a doctor says, “It’s a boy” or “It’s a girl” based on biology. Most people who were labeled ‘male at birth’ grow up to be a man, and identify as man, and most people who were labeled ‘female at birth’ grow up to be women and identify as women. such peoples are called Cisgender.

What Does Transgender Mean- Gender Identity

For Cisgender, or non-transgender people, their gender identity matches their sex at birth. For transgender people, the two do not match.

Gender Identity:

Some cases person’s gender identity ‘their inner sense of who they are’ is different from what their gender labeled at birth. Gender identity refers to a person’s internal sense of being male, female or something else.

Transgender people say they were assigned a sex that isn’t true to who they are. These people describe themselves as transgender. “Trans” is short for transgender. Trans woman lives as a woman today, but when she was born she was labeled as male. And Trans man lives as a man today, but when he was born he was labeled as female.

Non-binary or genderqueer – People who aren’t entirely male or entirely female. Some transgender people identify themselves as neither male nor female, or as a combination of male and female. We will discuss this more in upcoming articles.

Transgender identity Vs sexual orientation?

Let’s talk little about gender identity and sexual orientation. People often confuse gender identity with sexual orientation. Gender identity refers to a person’s internal sense of being male, female or something else.

Simply: Gender identity is about who you are. Sexual orientation is about who you want to be with. lesbian, gay, bisexual, or straight etc are terms for sexual orientation.

Being lesbian, gay, bisexual, or straight describes who you’re attracted to and who you feel yourself drawn to romantically, emotionally, and sexually. A trans person can be gay, lesbian, straight, or bisexual, just like someone who’s cisgender.
