Supergirl star Chyler Leigh who plays openly lesbian character Alex Danvers, talks about her own journey with her sexuality. After getting the support from her fans, she thanked her fans for their support after opening up about her sexuality.
Leigh’s post Titled ‘Wear Your Pride’ was published Monday (June 8) on her website Create Change. Though she didn’t specifically label herself or her sexuality, Leigh talks about how the journey and coming out story of her openly-lesbian Supergirl character Alex Danvers helped her start to realize her own path.
Chyler Leigh (played alex danvers on supergirl) talk about about sexuality. “When I was told that my character was to come out in season 2, a flurry of thoughts and emotions flew through and around me because of the responsibility I personally felt to authentically represent Alex’s journey,” she wrote.
“What I didn’t realize was how the scene where she finally confessed her truth would leap off the pages of the script and genuinely become a variation of my own. IRL. My heart felt like it was going to beat out of my chest each take we filmed, every time presenting another opportunity to get those honest words out of my mouth. Though they don’t exactly match my personal dialogue, the heart behind it surely did.”
“From the director, the press, the media, the cast, and the fans, I’m still told that it was the most realistic coming out scene they’d ever witnessed. And to steal from Alex’s words, that’s because there’s some truth to what she said about me.”
Leigh also talk about how playing an openly queer character on a TV show caused some distance from some of her conservative friends and family, but how she is proud of ‘the long and lonely road’ she has taken ‘no matter the cost.’
Leigh married Nathan West in 2002, and they have three children together. Talking about her husband she said, “It’s been a long and lonely road for both my husband and myself but I can whole-heartedly say that after all these years, he and I are still discovering the depths of ourselves and each other, but throughout our journey we’ve learned to be proud of who we are, no matter the cost.”
Later that same day, Leigh took to Instagram to share her appreciation for the “outpouring of love” she’d received since the article emerged online.
Post received even more support from costars and fellow actors. Including Supergirl herself, Melissa Benoist, and Floriana Lima, who played Alex’s former fiancée Maggie Sawyer on the show. Also trans Nicole Maines who played Dreamer, the first trans superhero on the show.
Melissa Benoist replied, “love you sister,” and Nicole Maines said, “I’m so incredibly proud of you and I am so happy for you. Sending you all my love and support.”
Floriana Lima responded. “Chy, I’m so unbelievably PROUD and HAPPY for you. You are a beautiful example of a fearless honesty, and I couldn’t admire you more,” she wrote.
