‘Ally’ Mean | LGBTQ+ Dictionary | Are You a LGBT Ally ?

What Does ‘Ally’ Mean ? In simple English ‘Ally’ is someone that “join with another individual or group for a common purpose.” In LGBT community Ally typically used to describe someone who does not identify as LGBTQ+ but who is supportive of LGBTQ+.

A straight ally or heterosexual ally is a Straight and/or cisgender person who supports equal gender equality, civil rights, LGBT social movements, and challenges homophobia, biphobia and transphobia. More specifically, A straight ally, is an individual, outside of the LGBTQ+ community that supports their rights and promotes equality for all.

Straight allies are most often found in organizations like Gay-Striaght Alliances and Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays. Some Allies are related to lgbtq+ people, and some are friends, and some are committed to lgbt equality.

The term ‘Ally’ can also be used by LGBTQ+ people when they demonstrate support for different members of the community. for example, a lesbian being an ally to a person who is transgender.

 

 

Where does Ally come from?

The concept of an ally, is much older. In the LGBTQ community, word ally is found around 1990s, an extension of the word ‘supporter’.

Many organizations such as PFLAG ( Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays ) has been a major organization for allies. It was founded in 1973.  PFLAG is the first and largest organization for uniting LGBTQ+ people, their parents and families, and allies.

Opportunities to learn and understand from LGBT+ community. You become less locked into gender role stereotypes.

 

 

How to Become an Ally to LGBTQ+ People

Awareness about lgbtq+ is very important. Awareness can be gained by reading about LGBTQ+ people and their lives, through conversations with LGBTQ+ people, attending awareness meetings, and by self-examination etc.

Knowledge and Education about lgbt is also important. Become educated on the issues, facts, laws, policies and culture of LGBTQ+ community. Encourage and promote a safe Environment for lgbt community.

Creating an Open and Supportive Environment for lgbt community is very helpful. Be a safe and open person to talk with. Teach and share your knowledge.

This makes everyone feel included at Pride marches, even if they’re celebrating other people’s sexualities.
