Written and directed by Francis Lee, lesbian romantic drama film Ammonite, staring Kate Winslet as Mary and Saoirse Ronan as Charlotte. which tells the story of Mary Anning (English palaeontologist – Born: 21 May 1799, Died: 9 March 1847). The first official Ammonite trailer has released.
Set in England in the 1800s, The film tells the story of paleontologist and fossil hunter Mary Anning, played by Winslet, who works alone on the rugged coastline in the south of the country. Her discoveries were often overlooked during her life. Now she searches for common fossils to sell to tourists to support herself and her sickly mother.
One day, a wealthy tourist pays a visit to Mary and asks her to take care of his wife Charlotte Murchison (Saoirse Ronan), who suffers from “melancholia.” Charlotte’s husband offers too much to turn down, and Mary started sort of mentoring Charlotte.
Mary initially clashes with her unwelcome guest, but despite the distance between their social class and personalities, an intense bond begins to develop, compelling the two women to determine the true nature of their relationship. Ammonite trailer has received good amount of positive views.
Director Francis Lee, told Entertainment Weekly he hopes the film helps audiences to see “the power of love; the power of a deep, intimate, human relationship; the power of touch; and hope.”
Ammonite was set to premiere at this year’s Cannes film festival but will now receive its first screening next month as part of this year’s Toronto film festival. Many expect for the film to be nominated for an Oscar.
Ronan has received four Oscar nominations, while Winslet has won one and received another six nominations. Ammonite is set to release in theaters November 13.
