It is person’s sexual identity or self-identification. Sexual orientation may include bisexual, heterosexual, homosexual, pansexual etc.
In simple words, Sexual orientation is about who you want to be with. Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, or Straight etc are terms for orientation. Being lesbian, gay, bisexual, or straight describes who you’re attracted to and who you feel yourself drawn to romantically, emotionally, and sexually.
Sexual orientation may include: Attraction towards the same gender (homosexuality i.e. gay, lesbian). Attraction towards a gender different than your own (heterosexuality i.e. straight). Attraction towards both men and women (bisexuality). Attraction towards all genders (pansexual) or Attraction towards no gender (asexuality).
So if someone ask you about your sexual orientation it simply means they want to know who you’re attracted to and who you feel yourself drawn to romantically, emotionally, and sexually. Many people discover more about their orientation over time. For example, some girls date boys in high school, then find later on that they are more attracted to girls.
And one thing before we close this topic. Sexual orientation is different from gender identity. People often confuse it with gender identity. Some cases person’s gender identity ‘their inner sense of who they are’ is different from what their gender labeled at birth.
Gender identity refers to a person’s internal sense of being male, female or something else. Simply, Gender identity is about who you are.
